Distinguished Tanzanian playwright, born 1943 in Kilwa, southern Tanzanian coast; son of a trader and Koranic teacher. Graduated in Theatre Arts from the University of DSM and continued his studies in the former German Democratic Republic, obtaining a doctorate from the Humboldt University of Berlin. Resumed teaching at the University of DSM in the Department of Theatre Arts and Music in 1978, later worked for Oxford University Press.
